How to get to Heraklion, Crete
- By air:The airport Nikos Kazantzakis
(airport Code: HER) is the only one in Heraklion. Heraklion
has about 15 direct flights per day from Athens (ATH), 2-4
direct flights per day from Thessaloniki (SKG), and 3-5
direct flights per week from Amsterdam via Transavia Airlines.
During the summer months, there may also be frequent charter
flights from many major European cities. Taxi service is
provided just outside the airport. There are also a number
of car rental companies located in the airport.
- By sea: Heraklion harbour is located
close to the city. There are two major shipping companies
on the line: Athens-Heraklion. Minoan
lines and ANEK
lines provide daily service from and towards Crete.
There are taxis available as well as buses near the harbour.
If you would like to rent a car, you will find a number
of rental agencies in the city centre (20 minutes walk or
2 minutes by taxi).
How to get to FORTH

- By taxi: The most convenient method to
get to the FORTH from all locations (airport/harbour/city
centre) is to use a taxi. The ride to FORTH is about 30
minutes and should cost approximately 25 Euros depending
on traffic.
- By car: From the airport/harbour/city
centre area, proceed to the highway (follow signs to the
National Road). On the highway, head West and follow the
signs to Rethimnon.
1. Use this map
to get from the highway untilyou find the exit to "Moires"
(to the south of Crete) or the "FO.R.T.H / I.T.E"
signs. for FORTH.
2. After you drive approximately a kilometer on this road
(along the red thin line) you see the signs to "F.O.R.T.H
/ I.T.E" and "University Hospital". It's a
steep right turn.
3. After you drive another kilometer you see another sign
"FO.R.T.H / I.T.E" and another right turn. (if by
mistake go straight you see the Hospital).
4. After you drive another kilometer you have to turn right
after which you see the buildings complex and then you turn
left.
- By bus: Go to the bus station, which
is located very close to the harbour. Take the bus to ITE.
Buses run every 1hour between 09:00:17:00. The fare is about
1 Euro. The ride is about 45 mins.
Once you arrive in FORTH
you may find the
Building A where the meeting will take place.

Information about Heraklion
Heraklion or Iraklion, is
the largest city and capital of Crete. It is also the fourth
largest city in Greece. Koule is a Venetian
Fortress of Rocca al Mare (1523-1540) that guards the inner
harbor.

Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaelogical
site in Crete and probably the ceremonial and political centre
of the Minoan civilization and culture.
