The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) mourns the loss of Professor Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes, its Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors, who died on November 29, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Research Activities:

Transport Phenomena. Fluid Mechanics. Analysis and modelling of porous media. Particle-fluid systems and colloids. Multi-phase flows in porous media. Filtration of gases and liquids. Soil reconstitution including natural attenuation and biodegradation. Transport phenomena in cellular biological media (biofilms, tissues, etc.).

Participation in Research Projects:

Main coordinator/ partner in over 50 international (NSF, Energy Institute, ERDA, DOE, STIMULATION STRIDE, BRITE-EURAM, ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE), national (Ministry of Technology, EPET-II, PAVE) and industrial (DUPONT, SHELL DEVELOPMENT, MARATHON OIL CO, SHELL, SEIKO EPSON and other) research projects. Establishment and Management of the Innovation Relay Centre, HELP-FORWARD NETWORK.

Publications:

100 refereed journal papers. 12 papers in books. 31 papers in international conference proceedings.

Conference Participation/Attendance:

Participation in over 80 international conferences.

Teaching Activities:

Fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, unit operations, theoretical modelling and simulation of physicochemical processes, particle-fluid systems, transport processes in porous media and applications, multiphase systems and interfaces.
