ΙΜΒΒ researcher Panayiota Poirazi to represent ERC at the World Economic Forum’s Meeting of New Champions 2014

Panayiota Poirazi, a Research Director and Head of the Computational Biology Lab ( at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) has been selected, together with three other ERC grantees, to represent the European Research Council at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions to be held from 10-12 September in Tianjin, China. Dr. Poirazi has been nominated to participate in the meeting as a “Young Scientist 2014” and will accompany ERC President Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon and ERC Scientific Council member Prof. Dr Sierd Cloetingh who will also address the Forum.

The Annual Meeting of the New Champions is the foremost global business gathering in Asia. Also known as the “Summer Davos”, the meeting creates a unique opportunity for exchange between leaders from top-ranked multinationals and chief executive officers of dynamic and fast-growing companies, including key decision-makers from government, media, academia and civil society.

The Young Scientists Program. Each year, the World Economic Forum selects 40 extraordinary scientists under the age of 40 to participate alongside business and political leaders in the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in China. These scientists are selected from all regions of the world and from a wide range of disciplines to bring value to the meeting by contributing their scientific perspective and delivering the most up-to-date trends from various fields of science.

Dr. Poirazi is the Head of the Computational Biology Lab at IMBB-FORTH ( She has made pioneering contributions in the fields of brain modeling and bioinformatics. She has received several awards for her academic achievements, including the F.S. Grodin award for outstanding research, the EMBO Young Investigator award, two Marie Curie fellowships, a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) and the “Manolis Christofides” Young Cypriot Investigator award. She is a member of Academia Net: a European portal for outstanding women scientists.
