Distinguished Undergraduate Grant "Stelios Orphanoudakis"

Jun 26, 2007

The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) establishes, as of the academic year 2007-2008, the award of distinguished undergraduate scholarships to the five (5) students that will be admitted to the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete having received the highest grades at the national university-entrance exams. The distinguished scholarship, amounting to 600 euro per month, will be granted for the full duration of the undergraduate studies (4 years), provided that the students' performance remains excellent.

The distinguished scholarship will be awarded to any student eligible for it, regardless of age, economic status and nationality. These distinguished scholarships are awarded in order to honor the memory of Stelios Orphanoudakis, who served as a Professor in the Computer Science Department for one decade (1994-2004) and was head of FORTH from 2004 until his demise in March 2005. The distinguished scholarship "Stelios Orphanoudakis" is particularly honorific, indicative of the student's excellent performance throughout his/her studies. Furthermore, the students awarded the scholarship will have priority eligibility in receiving a specialization scholarship from the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH during their postgraduate studies at the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete. FORTH reports directly to the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Ministry of Development, and is one of the most important research centers in Greece, enjoying international recognition. Its "excellence" is verified by the results of the latest evaluation of all Greek research centers, organized by the Ministry of Development. According to this evaluation, conducted by a group of high caliber international experts, FORTH is the best research center in Greece. The Institute of Computer Science of FORTH conducts groundbreaking research on Informatics and Telecommunication, and plays a leading role in the initiation and promotion of Information Society Technology on a national as well as on an international level.

Since its establishment in 1983, the Institute has been in close collaboration with the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete, forming an attraction pole for leading Greek scientists, many of whom have served as distinguished professors in top foreign universities. Furthermore, many students from the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete can have hands on experience on current developments in the Institute of Computer Science during their studies as specialization scholarship students. More than 100 such scholarships are given to undergraduate and postgraduate students each year.
