How to move around in HERAKLION

Distances - approximately, from the center of Heraklion:

  • 5 km to Heraklion International Airport
  • approx. 20 minutes walking distance to the Port
  • 6 km to the Minoan Palace of Knossos
  • 8 to 10 km to FORTH

Directions to FORTH by Taxi:

The use of a taxi is a convenient and relatively not expensive mean of transportation in Heraklion. Taxis in Heraklion are colored silver. You can find a lot around in the city streets. You can find them also waiting at the airport, the port, the bus stations, in the Lion's Square, the "Platia Eleftherias" Square, and in "Platia Kornarou".

From the Airport to the center of town, the cost of a taxi is approximately 10 to 15 Euro.

Directions to FORTH by Public Bus

There are two city bus lines you can use to get to FORTH. Ticket vending machines are located next to most main bus stops. You can also buy tickets from most kiosks around the city. It is necessary to buy your ticket prior to getting onto a public bus. The current price of the bus ticket is 1.20 Euros (one way) from the Airport to the center of town or 1.70 Euros (one way) from the center of town to FORTH.

A convenient downtown bus stop for taking the bus to FORTH is the one located in front of the Astoria Hotel in Plateia Eleftherias Square. Please keep in mind that city traffic may affect departure and arrival times.

Line 8 takes you directly into the FORTH campus. The sign on the bus reads "ITE" or "ITE-FORTH" and its schedule is:

Line 11 drops you off at a bus stop ~200m away from the FORTH gate (at an intersection with a roundabout). When entering the bus ask the driver to notify you when it is your stop. If he does not speak English keep in mind that the bus stops at the University Hospital (called PAGNH) three stops before yours. So when you see the Hospital, get ready. Three stops after that (if there is no one at any of the bus stops the bus does not stop) you have to exit.

The sign on the bus reads "PA.G.N.H." (the University Hospital) (or in Greek ΠΑ.Γ.Ν.Η.) and its schedule is from the Astoria Hotel in Plateia Eleftherias Square is:
