PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE IN GREECE
Through an Outstanding Series of Lectures

With the aim of the further education and promotion of talented young Greek and other International scientists, post Graduate and advanced Undergraduate students, the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in cooperation with the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) organize annually, series of advanced seminar lectures of one week duration each. The lectures are given in the English language by international highly reputated scientific personalities. The lectures cover subjects, which are at the forefront of the current research activities in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science. There are up to three lecture series per year planned, covering different scientific areas. The lectures are held in the facilities of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion Crete during the month July.

The Onassis Foundation provides financial aid for travel and accommodation expenses for up to 35 Greek students and up to 15 International students (post Graduate and advanced Undergraduate), selected on the basis of their academic performance. The financial aid for the travel of non-European students cannot exceed the maximum amount of the reimbursement provided for the travel of European students. Excellent knowledge of English is required. Admitted students receive a certificate after successful participation in the lectures and the submission of a summary report for each lecture presented.

The first lecture series was held during the first week of July 2001 and was devoted to Ultrafast physical and chemical processes as they apply to Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences.

From 2001 to 2023, twenty eight Science Lecture Series have been conducted funded by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (http://www.onassis.org/). For 1108 Greek and 466 non – Greek students selected to participate in the Lecture Series their travel and accommodation expenses have been covered. Among the 197 leading scientists who have been Lecturers of the Onassis Lecture Series, there are twenty five Nobel Price laureates (in Physics, in Chemistry, in Physiology or Medicine), five Turing Award Winners (Computer Science) and one Winner of the Fields Medal (Mathematics).
