Welcome to the help pages of FORTH web site. You will find here useful information, that might assist while visiting the FORTH website. Web site data

FORTH web site contains information about news, press releases and achievements of FORTH and its Institutes. likewise, through button links you are able to visit pages relative to FORTH (partner organisations, etc.).

You can also navigate to web pages of the Libraries of FORTH:

  • Library of the Institute of Computer Science
  • Library of the Institutes of Electronic Structure and Laser, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and Applied and Computational Mathematics.

Using the site

Main-introductory page

This page is the only one in the web site, which is mainly composed by graphics. In the background of the page, one can see the map of Greece, where the blue dots depict the town-host of FORTH's 7 Institutes.

The structure of the page is the following:

  • On the top right corner of each page there is a link to a more accessible version of the page. [1]
  • Below this link, we find the site toolbar, which is also found on all pages of the web site: [2]
    • a link to the SiteMap
    • a link to the search engine
    • a link to the help pages
    • the language selector.
      By selecting the Greek flag you can browse the pages which use the Greek language, or by selecting the English flag you can browse the pages which use the English language. When a language is selected the respective flag is grayed out.
  • Below the site toolbar, one the left of the page, you can find the buttons - links to various FORTH pages. [3]
  • On the right part of the page there is a part of arc separated into two parts by two horizontal lines. [4]
    • On the upside there are the buttons - links to the Institutes of FORTH.
    • Below there are the buttons - links to the pages of services that are not owned exclusively by an Institute, such as Central Administration, Crete University Press and the Libraries.
      When you roll over your mouse above each Institute, on the map the town-host's dot is beeing hilighted, the name of the town appears and also appears an indicative photo (on the bottom-left corner).
      Likewise, when you roll over your mouse above each dot, you can see all the Institutes and the services that are hosted by the respective town.
  • Hereafter the map there are the text links that contain the buttons of the left corner[3] , the site toolbar[2], the button "Institutes" and the services.[5]
  • On the footer there is the Page Info.[6]

Additionally, if you select the Phaistos Disc (top left corner) you will browse a page with the history of the disc.

Second level pages and beyond

Pages from 2nd level onwards follow the same layout.

  • On the top right corner of each page there is a link to a more accessible version of the page. [1]

Navigation buttons

The following buttons are used in the web site:

  • Language selection buttons.
    The languages are repesented by the respecive flags. They are placed at the site toolbar[2]. When a language is selected the respective flag is grayed out. By selecting the flag - button that is active you will browse the same page in the language you selected.
  • Phaistos Disc.
    The Phaistos disc is placed on the top left of the pages and its usage differs in proportion to the level.
    At the first page, if you select the Phaistos Disc (top left corner) you will browse a page with the history of the disc.
    At the pages of the second level (central pages of FORTH) upwards of the disc is written the acronym of FORTH and if you select it, you will go to the first page of FORTH.
    At the pages of the third level (pages of the Institutes - Services) disc is imaginable divided into two parts. Upwards the first part is written the acronym of FORTH and if you select it, you will go to the first page of FORTH. Upwards the second part is written the acronym of the Institute and if you select it, you will go to the first page of the Institute.
  • Navigation Buttons
    At the pages of the second and third level, below the Phaistos disc there is the navigation column that contains the navigation buttons for that level and the button "Printer friendly version " The button Printer friendly versionwhich automatically transforms the page content into a printer friendly version.
    The navigation buttons have four states:
    • Selectable  stateThis is the state which shows that the page which corresponds to this button is available to be chosen.
    • Selected stateThis is the state which shows that the page which corresponds to this button is already selected.
    • Selected categoryThis is the state which shows that the page you are browsing belongs to the category which corresponds to this button. The button links to the main page of the category.
    • Ενεργοποιημένος σύνδεσμοςThis is the state which appears when you roll over a button which is an active link.
  • Return to the top of the page button.
    It is used in pages with long text (such this one) in order to make browsing easier.

Site Path

The site path can be found on all pages beyond second level. It is placed on the left-top part of the page [7] (above the Phaistos Disc). The site-path presents the link between the current page and the previous levels of the web site.

Navigation text-links

Navigation text links are placed at the bottom of each page [5].They are seperated from the rest content by a dotted horizontal line and contain all the links of the navigation column [3], and the site toolbar [2].

Page information

On the bottom left corner there is the footer of the page [6] which contains page information (last revision date, the Email address of the author and the URL of the page).

More accessible version

A more accessible version of FORTH web site is available through the link More acessible version, which is located on the top right corner fo the page[1] in every web page of the site.

The structure of the More accessible version pages is the following :

On the corner higher right of each page are four textual links, which are used for reasons of accessibility:

  • the first "jump to page content" takes you to the contents of the page;
  • the second "jump to quick-access links" calls a list of short cuts towards various sections of the page;
  • the third "help" calls the page of help, which you are currently browsing;
  • the fourth "standard version" links to the standard html version of this page.

Below the above-mentioned links there is the page header.

Below the page header there are the link groups.

  • the first "site navigation" allows you to navigate throughout the accessible version of the html pages of this site;
  • the second "site tools" contains a series of links such as:
    • Site Map, which links to the page with the site map of this site;
    • Search, which links to the search engine of the web site;
    • ÅëëçíéêÜ, which directs to the Greek version of this page;
    • Help, which links to the help pages, which you are currently browsing.
  • the third "page path" links to the previous levels of this site

Hereafter there is the page header and afterwards the page content.

After the page content there is the "site navigation " group again, in order to navigate easier to the site.

Below the "site navigation" group there is the "page information".

At the foot of the page appear the quick-access links, which are a list of short cuts towards various sections of the page.

Printing

By selecting the button "Printer friendly version" Printer friendly version Buttonfrom the navigation column, the current page auto-converting into a version that contains only the title of the page, the page content and, at the footer, the page information. Below the page information there is a link to the standard version.

Which Web browser to use

The FORTH site Web pages have been designed to work with most popular browsers. It should be noted however that throughout the pages of this site is made using HTML 4.01 and therefore a browser capable of supporting this version of HTML, such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, and especially their versions 4.0 and above, is required.

If your browser does not support HTML 4.01 you can browse FORTH web site through the link More acessible version, which is located on the top right corner fo the page in every web page of the site.

Optimising your browser

Cache:

The FORTH web site is updated very often. Reload the index pages to ensure that you have the latest version. You may adjust the cache settings of your browser to verify documents once per session.

Screen resolution:

The FORTH web site is designed to be viewed by the widest possible audience. The Web pages fit in screen resolutions of 640X480 pixels and 14' monitors.

Graphics:

These are used mainly for navigation buttons and are kept to a minimum byte-size for faster downloading. It is therefore recommended that you enable graphics in your browser's set-up.

The only exception is the first page which is mainly composed by graphics.

However, all aimages contain alternative text, which appears in case your browser settings does not support graphics. Besides, in all pages the navigation buttons also exist as text links at the bottom of the page.
