A collaborating FORTH Researcher is elected to the International Academy of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering

Prof. Dimitrios Fotiadis, a collaborating researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology- Hellas (FORTH), was selected as a new distinguished member of the International Academy of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering (IAMBE). Members of the Academy are distinguished researchers engaged in research in the field of medicine and biomechanics to promote biomedical engineering or biotechnology and have played a leading role in their field. The election of a new member is a recognition of his contribution at an international level. IAMBE Fellow is the highest degree for Academy members and is recognized by the scientific community as an outstanding honor and an important career achievement.

Professor Dimitrios I. Fotiadis has offered significant research in biomedical engineering, while his research interests include flat tissue and instrument modeling, smart portable / implantable automated diagnostics, large data processing, sensor development, medical image processing and bioinformatics. It is worth noting that Mr. Fotiadis is the third Greek scientist chosen to receive this distinction.

The ceremony held for the 24 newly elected members will be held on 20 September 2019 in Pittsburgh, USA, in conjunction with the Carnegie Mellon Forum in Biomedical Technology.

Dimitrios I. Fotiadis is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina, Director of the Medical Technology and Intelligent Information Systems Unit (MEDLAB) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Michaelidion Cardiology Center. He has coordinated and participated in more than 200 projects. He is the author of more than 260 articles in scientific journals, 450 articles in conference proceedings, 50 chapters in books, and is also an author or co-author of 35 books. His work has received more than 12,000 citations (h-index = 58). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of EAMBES, a member of the IEEE Technical Committee of Biomedical Informatics, Editor in Chief of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, and Associate Editor of the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.
