Forth Photonics, a spin-off company of the Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (FORTH), raised £ 6.1m in order to intensify the marketing of DySIS in the UK and Europe.

The Programme of Turkish Studies of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas announces its 7th International Symposium. The topic of the Symposium will be Political initiatives "From the Bottom Up" in the Ottoman Empire. The sessions are scheduled for January 9 - 11, 2009 and will take place at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Melissinou and Nikiforou Foka 130, Rethymno.)

On Tuesday, December 2 at 7pm at the residence of the Spanish ambassador to Greece, Mr. Miguel de Fuertes and his spouse's, Ms. Aurora de Fuertes, the latter a professor at the University of Oviedo, Mr. Nikos Hadjinicolaou was awarded the Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, a Spanish civil order granted in recognition of services that benefit the country. Mr. Hadjinicolaou received this honor for his extensive service to the study and promotion of the works of Dominikos Theotokopoulos as well as of modern spanish art.

Crete University Press (CUP) recently announced their new edition, "In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind" by the Nobel prize recipient Eric R. Kandel, translated and edited by Azarias Karamanlidis, and featuring an introduction by Elias Kouvelas.

This year's national L'Oreal - UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science was awarded to Katerina Andreopoulou.

The project makes available to the public a wealth of cultural information about archaeology, environment, cultural foundations, as well as history, art and music of the island of Crete via the webpage http://digitalcrete.ims.forth.gr. IMS has also organized an event to present the project results at its premises (Melissinou and Nikiforou Foka street, at the old town of Rethymno) on Friday, October 24, 2008, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
