An important leap in our understanding of the star formation process was achieved by scientists at the University of Crete and the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas. Using archival data from ESA’s Herschel mission, Aris Tritsis and Kostas Tassis have discovered, for the first time, an interstellar cloud – a nursery of stars – the magnetic field of which vibrates! Decrypting the «song» in this vibration, they managed to reveal the true 3D structure of the cloud, paving the way to solving one of the biggest mysteries in Astrophysics: what determines the number and kind of stars and planets that are formed in our Galaxy?
A new Institute, the only in Greece dedicated exclusively to Astrophysics, will soon join the big family of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), becoming its 7th Institute, after a legislation voted in the Greek Parliament on February 26th 2018.
Assistant Professor Xenofontas Dimitropoulos, Affiliated Researcher at ICS-FORTH, ERC Starting Grant holder, was awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant during the last round of the application process for the PHILOS project.
Seeking the Primordial Light of the Universe: Prof. Konstantinos Tassis, Associated Researcher of IESL-FORTH, receives a Consolidator Award from the European Research Council (ERC) for the implementation of the PASIPHAE project
Konstantinos Tassis, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and Associate Faculty Member of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), was awarded a “Consolidator Grant” by the European Research Council (ERC) to implement the PASIPHAE experiment (http://pasiphae.science/).
Dr. Marinos Sariyannis has earned a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (H2020-ERC-COG-2017) with the project GHOST
Dr. Marinos Sariyannis has earned a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (H2020-ERC-COG-2017) with the project GHOST - Geographies and Histories of the Ottoman Supernatural Tradition: Exploring Magic, the Marvelous, and the Strange in Ottoman Mentalities.
Alexandros Lappas, Research Director at FORTH, Selected to Receive a Competitive U.S. Office of Naval Research Grant Award
Alexandros Lappas, a chemical physicist at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), will be supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG) under their international Research Grants scheme to conduct interdisciplinary, basic scientific research in the area of magnetism and superconductivity.
Researchers at IESL-FORTH, Attosecond Science and Technology Laboratory, led by Dr. Paraskevas Tzallas, in collaboration with scientists at the Department of Physics, University of Crete and the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany, have developed a novel quantum optical approach for describing interactions of intense electromagnet fields with atoms. This approach, published recently in Nature Communications , has led to the development of a quantum spectrometer in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range. The work unifies two, until recently disjoint fields, quantum optics and strong-field physics and paves the way for a new era of experimental investigations of strong-field laser matter interaction in the context of quantum optics.
FORTH Chairman, Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis, receives the prestigious Helmholtz International Fellow Award
The Association has set the cooperation with the world's best scientists as a key objective. To this end, the organization has established the Helmholtz International Fellow Award, which targets outstanding senior scientists and research managers based outside Germany who have excelled in fields relevant to the Helmholtz Association, including science management at large international research institutions.
Permanent AXA Chair on Epigenetics at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of FORTH in Crete, held by Dr. Ioannis Talianidis, IMBB’s Director
The first AXA Chair on Epigenetics in Greece was announced on Monday, 10th of July at a formal event organized by AXA Hellas on the premises of the French Embassy in Athens.
IMBB-FORTH Researchers reveal how stress and nutrient deprivation influence complex brain functions such as learning and memory
The findings of the study published today in the premier international scientific journal Cell Metabolism, reveal an intricate molecular mechanism that regulates neuronal metabolism in the adult mammalian brain.
