IMBB-FORTH’s Researcher Panayiota Poirazi elected as member of EMBO
Panayiota Poirazi, Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).
Dr. Poirazi joins 65 other outstanding researchers who have been newly-elected to the organisation which promotes excellence in the life sciences. There are currently 1700 EMBO members and more than 59 Nobel laureates amongst the membership.
The goals of EMBO are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers and help build a European research environment of scientific excellence. Dr. Poirazi received this extremely prestigious election as a recognition of her dedicated, longstanding efforts and seminal findings on the role of dendrites in neuronal computations and learning/memory functions.
Dr. Poirazi is head of the Computational Neuroscience lab at IMBB-FORTH. Dr. Poirazi’s work focuses on understanding how dendrites contribute to information processing and memory formation in the brain via the use of theoretical and computational modeling approaches. Dr. Poirazi has received several awards for her seminal contributions in neuroscience, including the EMBO Young Investigator award in 2005, two Marie Curie fellowships (2002 and 2008), a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2012 and the “Manolis Christofides” Young Cypriot Investigator award in 2014. She is a member of AcademiaNet: a European portal for outstanding women scientists, the Young Academy of Europe, the Young Scientist Community of the World Economic Forum and the FENS-Kavli Network of Excellence.
