Establishment of the Precision Medicine Unit of Crete
The establishment of the Precision Medicine Unit of Crete was presented on Thursday September 13th, 2018 at 13:30 at an event open to the public. The operation of the Precision Medicine Unit of Crete is the result of the close collaboration between the Department for Research and Innovation of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Health, in the context of the National Network of Precision Medicine.
This flagship initiative is expected to provide effective targeted therapy to cancer patients, based on the DNA damage of the cancer cells of each individual while, at the same time, it will be able to detect possible genetic predisposition to the manifestation of cancer to healthy people with genetic inheritance and provide personalized medical prevention. The ambition of the initiative is for Personalized Medicine to become accessible to all citizens through the Public Health System.
The implementation of the Network requires the creation of specialized units of gene and molecular analysis, accredited biobanks and computing platforms to collect and process biomedical data which will contribute to the creation of a national database valuable for future research, and clinical exploitation accessible by all entities involved in the Network.
The School of Medicine of the University of Crete, the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) and the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of FORTH are engaged in the implementation of the Precision Medicine Unit of Crete and its operation will be supported with more than €1,3 million for the next two years.
