Professor George A. Garinis is elected member of European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)

George A, Garinis, Professor at the department of Biology of the University of Crete and affiliated group leader at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization.

EMBO announces today that 56 life scientists have been elected to its membership, joining a group of more than 1800 of the best researchers in Europe and around the world.

“EMBO Members are excellent scientists who conduct research at the forefront of all life science disciplines, ranging from computational models or analyses of single molecules and cellular mechanics to the study of higher-order systems in development, cognitive neuroscience and evolution,” says EMBO Director Maria Leptin.

Membership to this prestigious European Organization is bestowed to scientists who have made seminal contributions and achievements towards promoting science, and is an important recognition of the scientific excellence and the highly competitive research conducted at FORTH and the University of Crete. The members are actively involved in the execution of the organization’s initiatives by serving on EMBO Council, Committees and Editorial Boards, by evaluating applications for EMBO funding, by mentoring young scientists and by providing suggestions and feedback on activities.

George A. Garinis is a Professor of Genetics at the department of Biology of the University of Crete and is also heading the Genome Stability and Mammalian Physiology laboratory at the IMBB-FORTH. He earned his Ph.D. degree at the University of Athens, and trained as a postdoctoral researcher at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His research focuses on DNA damage and its impact on mammalian physiology, aging and cancer. He received several notable scientific prizes, including an ERC Consolidator Grant, an EMBO Young Investigator Award and has published a number of papers in prominent journals. The last 5 years, he has coordinated several national and European Research programs and he currently coordinates two European programs on DNA repair mechanisms (aDDRess-ITN) and aging (HealthAge-ITN).

EMBO will formally welcome its new Members and Associate Members at the annual Members’ Meeting in Heidelberg between 29 and 31 October 2019.An online directory with all existing and new EMBO Members is available at people.embo.org.
