New Director of the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences, FORTH

Dr. Theophilos Ioannides, Research Director at the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences of FORTH, was elected Director of the Institute on March 20, 2023. He was officially appointed as Institute Director on April 10, 2023.

The election was made by a seven-member Evaluation Committee appointed by the Ministry of Development and Investments chaired by Professor Dionisios G. Vlachos, University of Delaware, USA.

Short CV

Dr. Theophilos Ioannides holds a diploma in chemical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (1986) and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Patras (1991). He carried out postdoctoral research at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Caltech (1991-1993) and at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Patras and at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and High Temperature Chemical Processes of the Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas (FORTH/ICE-HT) in the 1993-1997 period. He was appointed as Associate Researcher at FORTH/ICE-HT in 1997 and he has been a Research Director at FORTH/ICE-HT since 2008. He has extensive teaching experience as a collaborating faculty member of the Hellenic Open University (2011-2019) and has supervised eight Ph.D. theses. His research interests refer to: (i) heterogeneous catalysis and catalytic reaction engineering, (ii) membrane gas separations, (ii) functional porous materials with applications in electrochemical energy storage, thermal insulation, etc. He has a considerable number of publications in high impact international journals. He is Academic Editor of the Chemical Engineering Journal (Elsevier) since 2018. He has participated/coordinated numerous national and European research projects and he has served as member of the Sectorial Scientific Council in the field of Energy, National Council for Research and Innovation of Greece (2018-2020). He was the recipient of one of the Global 100 Eco-Tech Awards in September 2005 at Expo 2005, Nagoya, Japan, for the technology “Transparent thermal insulation”.
