Lecture "Indians and Peoples: Contemporary Challenges, Historical Experiences. A case study: Mexico"

Τhe Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) is organizing a lecture entitled "Indians and Peoples: Contemporary Challenges, Historical Experiences. A case study: Mexico".
The Lecture will take place on Wednesday, February 25, (19:30), at IMS-FORTH, 130 Nikiforou Foka and Melissinou, in the old down, Rethymnon.

Speaker: Mirian Galante, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

What do the notions of Indian, indigenous, or indigenous peoples refer to? What is the relationship between indigenous populations and the historical developments of the majority societies within which they are embedded?

This session will propose elements for a critical historical reconstruction of the notion of indio, with particular attention to the Mexican case during the first decades of independent nationhood. It will identify evidence that calls into question a univocal and atemporal understanding of the category indio, engaging with the renewed historiographical interest in what has been termed “indigenous agency.”
