Panayiota Poirazi, a Research Director and Head of the Computational Biology Lab (www.dendrites.gr) at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) has been selected, together with three other ERC grantees, to represent the European Research Council at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions to be held from 10-12 September in Tianjin, China.

Art has long been interested in research and science: from Renaissance art and Leonardo da Vinci with his studies of physics, to 20th century art with Surrealists drawing on Freud and the subconscious, to the contemporary American James Turrell working with the optical illusions of light and the young Chinese WU Juehui dealing with the visual aspects of neuroscience, artists have been fascinated by research and science and have been deeply influenced in the course of their work. However, the creative approach of art by scientists and researchers could prove highly interesting as well.

The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) organized a series of public lectures in 2013 on topics of current interest in sciences and humanities to celebrate 30 years since its establishment.
TransForm: Theoretical Foundations of Transactional Memory
The research project TransForm, where the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Ressearch and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) acted as the coordinator, has recently been completed. TransForm was a project funded by the European Commission in the context of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Action. The project contributed significantly to building the theoretical underpinning for the design and analysis of Transactional Memory (TM) systems.

The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of FORTH organized the 5th Annual Meeting of the Climate for Culture project that was held on the grounds of FORTH, Heraklion Crete, Greece on September 23-27 2013. The CLIMATE FOR CULTURE project estimates the impacts of changing climate conditions on historic buildings and their vast collections in Europe and the Mediterranean.
