Alexandros Lappas, Research Director at FORTH, Selected to Receive a Competitive U.S. Office of Naval Research Grant Award
Alexandros Lappas, a chemical physicist at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), will be supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG) under their international Research Grants scheme to conduct interdisciplinary, basic scientific research in the area of magnetism and superconductivity.
Researchers at IESL-FORTH, Attosecond Science and Technology Laboratory, led by Dr. Paraskevas Tzallas, in collaboration with scientists at the Department of Physics, University of Crete and the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany, have developed a novel quantum optical approach for describing interactions of intense electromagnet fields with atoms. This approach, published recently in Nature Communications , has led to the development of a quantum spectrometer in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range. The work unifies two, until recently disjoint fields, quantum optics and strong-field physics and paves the way for a new era of experimental investigations of strong-field laser matter interaction in the context of quantum optics.
FORTH Chairman, Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis, receives the prestigious Helmholtz International Fellow Award
The Association has set the cooperation with the world's best scientists as a key objective. To this end, the organization has established the Helmholtz International Fellow Award, which targets outstanding senior scientists and research managers based outside Germany who have excelled in fields relevant to the Helmholtz Association, including science management at large international research institutions.
Permanent AXA Chair on Epigenetics at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of FORTH in Crete, held by Dr. Ioannis Talianidis, IMBB’s Director
The first AXA Chair on Epigenetics in Greece was announced on Monday, 10th of July at a formal event organized by AXA Hellas on the premises of the French Embassy in Athens.
IMBB-FORTH Researchers reveal how stress and nutrient deprivation influence complex brain functions such as learning and memory
The findings of the study published today in the premier international scientific journal Cell Metabolism, reveal an intricate molecular mechanism that regulates neuronal metabolism in the adult mammalian brain.
Panayiota Poirazi, Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).
IESL-FORTH’s Senior Researcher is the newly elected President of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS)
George Kiriakidis, Professor of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and Head of the Transparent Conductive Materials (TCM) research group at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), has been unanimously elected as the President of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) for the period 2017-2019. Prof. Kiriakidis has served as vice-President of the E-MRS for the last four years. It is the first time that a Greek materials scientist is voted in the E-MRS leadership.
FORTH - IMBB researcher and University of Crete Medical School Professor receives the Galien Scientific Research Award
Nektarios Tavernarakis, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), and Professor at the Medical School of the University of Crete was awarded the Galien Scientific Research Award at a ceremony that took place on April 1st, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, at Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall.
Research carried out at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology-FORTH and published today in Nature Cell Biology (http://www.nature.com/ncb/index.html) reveals that DNA repair factors ERCC1 and XPF play a crucial during mammalian development.
