Dr. Dimitris Plexousakis, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Crete and Head of the Information Systems Laboratory(ISL) of the Institute of Computer Science was elected Director of the Institute on December 22, 2016. His official appointment is expected in the next few weeks.

Short Bio

Dimitris Plexousakis is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Crete and Affiliated Researcher with the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH. As of January 2012 he is the Head of the Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science. He is also the Chair of the Scientific Council of the National Documentation Center as of March 2014. He served as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete from September 2006 to August 2010 and Director of the University’s Data Processing Laboratory from December 2009 to December 2012.

He received a BSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Crete in 1988 and MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 1990 and 1996 respectively. He held a Visiting Assistant Professor appointment at the Department of Computing and Information Sciences, Kansas State University (1995-1997) and a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of South Florida (1997-1998). He was a visiting professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete (1999-2000) and the University of Vienna, CNAM and Orsay (2004-2005).

His research interests are in the area of Data and Knowledge Base Management Systems. More specifically, his research focuses on Knowledge Base Design, Knowledge Representation, Formal Reasoning Systems, Temporal and Spatial Databases, Semantic Web Information Systems and Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Ambient Intelligence and Cognitive Robotics. He possesses extensive experience in the coordination and implementation of research projects at the Institute of Computer Science and the University of Crete. He has published more than 190 papers in peer reviewed international conferences and journals in Computer Science and participates in numerous international organizing and programme committees of conferences and journal editorial boards. He also has extensive experience in research proposal evaluations in EC panels from FP5 to H2020 and ERC. He is a member of the Board of the European Research Consortium on Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM), coordinating joint research activities of its member institutions. He is a member of ACM, IEEE, AAAI and the Hellenic Society for Artificial Intelligence.
