Efkranti Prize 2019 awarded to Gelina Harlaftis, Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of FORTH, for promoting Greek shipping internationally

Prof. Gelina Harlaftis, Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of FORTH and head of the Centre of Maritime History was awarded the Efkranti prize for the international promotion of Greek Shipping, at the Benaki Museum, on 22 July 2019.

Gelina Harlaftis is the historian who, 30 years ago, first brought and established the discipline of Maritime History in Greek Universities and Research Centers. She is one of the most acclaimed and acknowledged personalities in the academic world internationally, as well as, in the Hellenic shipping community. With her rich research and publication work, her public presentation and her academic presence in Greece and abroad, she has contributed to the promotion and recognition of Greek shipping, making it a point of reference for worldwide maritime matters.

Her award isa great honour for FORTH and its community.

The Efkranti Prizes are awarded once a year, by the periodical Naftika Chronika, under the auspices of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation. These prizes aim at highlighting the protagonists of the year, a task which is carried out by a multidisciplinary committee with background in maritime matters, academic research and relevant news services.

Gelina Harlaftis, Director of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) since 2017, is Professor of Maritime History in the Department of History of the Ionian University. She has graduated from the University of Athens and has completed her graduate studies in the Universities of Cambridge (M.Phil.) and Oxford (D.Phil.). She was President of the International Maritime Economic History Αssociation (2004-2008). In 2009 she was a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford University, and in 2008 an Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., International Visiting Scholar in the Business History Program, Harvard Business School. She was also visiting professor in Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada (1998) and Honorary Research Fellow in the Institute of Maritime Studies, Greenwich University in London (1999). Her research interests are in maritime history, economic and social history, business history, global history and diaspora history. She has published 25 books in English, Canadian and Greek publishing houses and more than 50 articles in edited volumes and international peer-reviewed journals.
