“Mediterranean Film Culture” Summer School

The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Rethymno, Crete) organizes a ten-day Summer School on Mediterranean Film Culture (1-10 July 2024).

The purpose of this Summer School is to introduce participants to Mediterranean Film Culture in its various aspects, through teaching, class discussions, and field trips.

The classes will cover three main Mediterranean countries, Italy, Greece, and France, but time will also be devoted to exploring the transnational relations with other Mediterranean countries. The lectures will explore the work of major filmmakers; film genres and stars; issues of national identity, sexuality and gender; cinema-history relations; film industry, production, and co-production; shooting locations; and the depiction of everyday life aspects.

A broader aim of the Summer School is to promote the idea of the Mediterranean Film Culture, the study of which brings to the fore essential points of social/cultural interactions and intersection and strong transnational bonds. Two trips to Cretan areas, where well known international film productions have been shot, will offer the participants the opportunity to appreciate first-hand the social, economic, and cultural importance of a film location in the making of a film as well as in the area itself.

The Summer School will take place at The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) – a stunning complex of buildings of the Venetian and Ottoman era, based in the old town of Rethymno, Crete, south of the Fortezza Castle and 200 meters west of the small Venetian harbor.

This summer school is addressed to undergraduate and graduate students in any fields, with priority given to students of Humanities, but also welcomes anyone interested in the subject. There is a limited number of places available (15) in order to offer an intensive learning experience to all participants.
