FORTH accepts proposals for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of V. Xanthopoulos-St. Pnevmatikos 2024

FORTH announces the 33rd call for the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stefanos Pnevmatikos.

FORTH President, Prof. Nektarios Tavernarakis mentioned in this regard: ‘FORTH wanting to honor and keep alive the memory, contribution, and sacrifice of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stefanos Pnevmatikos, professors at the University of Crete and FORTH members who were murdered in Heraklion on the evening of November 27, 1990, while jointly teaching an advanced seminar, established the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in their memory. The award has been presented annually since 1991 as a moral award to outstanding university teachers, selected by the award committee, whose members cover a wide range of disciplines.’

For 2024, proposals that fall under the thematic cycle of Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Polytechnic Schools, etc.) are accepted. Closing date is Friday, June 28, 2024.

The President of the Award Committee, Prof. Maria Efthymiou emphasises the definition of excellence in academic teaching as described in the award statute:

‘The concept of excellent academic teaching includes all those activities that open scientific avenues to the student, inspire and guide them in research, and make them member of the scientific ethos and the selfless search for truth.’

The award can be given to faculty members of Greek universities, specialist scientists and other teaching staff, members of research centers with university teaching work, as well as those who previously had any of the above qualities (e.g., emeritus professors). The award, however, is only given to living people.

Proposals are submitted by a person or more (e.g., teachers or students) who is familiar with the teaching work of those proposed. The proposal should preferably include a letter justifying why the nominee is eligible to receive the particular award accompanied by a curriculum vitae.
