Center for Quantum Science & Technologies was established at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH-QuTech)
A Center for Quantum Science & Technologies (FORTH-QuTech) was established at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). The mission of FORTH-QuTech is to study fundamental quantum science and develop applied quantum technologies, enabling the Center to gain the expertise and authority needed to enhance the international competitiveness and recognition of both FORTH and Greece in these research fields, which are among the most demanding and competitive fields of modern science.
The vision for FORTH-QuTech is to become a national and international point of reference in quantum science and technologies. This will be achieved by ensuring continuous development of science, technology, expertise, and human capital, attracting high-quality scientific personnel and significant funding. This approach will also make FORTH a highly attractive destination for young talent.
The FORTH-QuTech will be coordinated by the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of FORTH in collaboration with the Institutes of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Computer Science, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Mediterranean Studies, Chemical Engineering Sciences, Geoenergy and Biomedical Research.
Moving towards a quantum revolution
We are currently experiencing a wave of quantum revolution that enables Quantum Technologies to build on the foundations of quantum mechanics and information science. Quantum mechanics underpins our comprehension of the microscopic realm, while information science forms the backbone of today's ubiquitous communication and information processing systems. The symbiosis of these fields brings about Quantum Technologies including quantum information processing, secure communications, quantum simulations and quantum enhanced sensing and metrology.
Within this multidisciplinary and rapidly developing research field, FORTH-QuTech aims to develop new tools for groundbreaking investigations across various basic research and technology disciplines and to generate new knowledge in the understanding of quantum phenomena, from the microcosm to the universe.. Specifically, our new Center for Quantum Science & Technologies at FORTH aims to form a critical mass of researchers from various disciplines to develop new paradigms, knowledge and understanding while dealing with: photonic, atomic, molecular and condensed matter systems for quantum information science (processing, communication, sensing, metrology, simulation, design of quantum algorithms and hybrid (quantum-classical) systems for computing and simulations).
Within this framework, FORTH-QuTech will translate the new knowledge into tools for solving problems and, leveraging FORTH's outstanding educational experience, it will offer to the new generation of scientists an exceptional opportunity for training in state-of-the-art basic research and technology. Also, the Center aims to disseminate existing and new knowledge with educational actions, to inform the scientific and business community, in collaboration with academic institutions, scientific companies and other bodies. Towards this direction, FORTH-QuTech will organize informative days, scientific lectures, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events.
FORTH would like to invite scientists, specialized in these specific fields, who would be interested in collaborating with the Institution, to contact Dr. Paraskevas Tzallas (ptzallas@iesl.forth.gr) and Dr. George Konstantinidis (aek@physics.uoc.gr), Research Directors at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser.
