A Century of Light – Three Events in December!

Electrification marks a defining milestone in the history of the island and its path toward modernization. Electricity began at the Old Power Plant of Heraklion, spread throughout the city, and soon reached the Cretan countryside. Electric power would forever transform the landscape, reshaping everyday reality.

The Natural History Museum of Crete organized three events under the title “A century of light”, for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the electrification of the city of Heraklion, with free admission for the public!

The first event took place in collaboration with the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 19:00, at the FORTH Science & Cultural Center, Zografou & Averof Streets, Heraklion.

Dr. Giannis Antoniadis, Principal Researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH, gave a talk titled “Light from the Beacons of the Universe,” a fascinating exploration of the pulses of neutron stars that act as cosmic lighthouses. Through scientifically grounded examples, the audience discovered how light reveals the secrets of the sky and brings us closer to nature’s most extreme conditions.

It was a lecture for all who love science, exploration, and the “magic” of the night sky.

The event was also streamed via Zoom by the Institute of Astrophysics.
