Lectures by Antonis Anastasopoulos, Yannis Spyropoulos and Petros Kastrinakis

The Municipality of Rethymnon and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of FORTH organized a series of lectures in 2025 for the general public in Rethymnon. In these talks, the Institute’s researchers presented aspects of their research in an accessible way, followed by a discussion.

The sixth event titled "Crete in the Ottoman Era", took place on Monday, December 15, 2025 at 19.30 and included the following lectures:

  • “The Perishable and the Eternal: Muslim Funerary Steles from Ottoman Crete”, by Antonis Anastasopoulos, Associate Professor at the University of Crete and Collaborating Faculty member of IMS-FORTH
  • “Sfakia on the Eve of 1821: The Perspective of Ottoman Sources”, by Yiannis Spyropoulos, Principal Researcher at IMS-FORTH
  • The Port City of Chania in the 19th Century”, by Petros Kastrinakis, Postdoctoral Researcher at IMS-FORTH.

The events took place at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in the old town, 130 Nikiforou Fokas and Melissinou.
