The Municipality of Rethymnon and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of FORTH organized a series of lectures in 2025 for the general public in Rethymnon. In these talks, the Institute’s researchers presented aspects of their research in an accessible way, followed by a discussion. The events took place at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in the old town, 130 Nikiforou Fokas and Melissinou.

The fifth event titled “Two Painters from Crete”, took place on Monday, December 1st, at 20:30, and included the following lectures:

• “The Romanticism of Nikolaos Kounelakis: A Cretan Painter Who Never Set Foot on the Island” by Panagiotis Ioannou, Professor at the University of Crete & collaborating faculty member of IMS–FORTH
• “Popi Pavlaki (1904–1998): The Journey of a Painter from Rethymno to Paris”, by Popi Sfakianaki, Lecturer at the University of Crete and Postdoctoral Researcher at IMS–FORTH
