Seminar by Francesco Dondero: Understanding PFAS-Mode of Action Across Model Species, Bioaccumulation in Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Webs, and Advanced Strategies for Water Remediation
The Seminar took place at the Conference Centre of the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (FORTH/ICE-HT), Stadiou str.-Platani Patras, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 (16.00),with the possibility of simultaneous online attendance.
Speaker: Prof. Francesco Dondero, Department of Science and Technological Innovation,University of Eastern Piedmont “Amedeo Avogadro«, Italy.
The Seminar was in English.
Abstract
This seminar explored the mode of action of PFAS in different model species, highlighting key toxicological mechanisms and biological effects. There was a discussion about bioaccumulation patterns across terrestrial and aquatic trophic chains, examining how PFAS transfer and persist in ecosystems. Additionally, the session covered innovative strategies for PFAS removal from water in real case studies, including advanced remediation technologies based on urface action foam fractionation.
Short CV
Francesco Dondero, PhD is a professor of Ecology and Molecular Ecology at the Università del Piemonte Orientale, where he directs the Laboratory of Molecular and Environmental Toxicology. His research focuses on ecotoxicology, molecular systems biology, and the environmental impact of micropollutants, particularly PFAS and nanomaterials. As coordinator of the H2020 SCENARIOS project, he leads PFAS toxicology and remediation efforts. With extensive international collaborations and leadership in European projects, he is a pioneer in integrative biology and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
