Panayiota Poirazi is one of the 20 top neuroscientists forming the FENS-KAVLI Network of Excellence

THE FENS-KAVLI NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE is a prestigious network of 30 outstanding young European neuroscientists that represent the most talented scholars among their peer group. The first 20 members were selected in December 2014 and another 10 will be selected in 2015. Panayiota Poirazi, a Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation of Research and technology Hellas (FORTH) was nominated by the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience and has been selected as one of the 20 top young neuroscientists that will form the core of the FENS-KAVLI Network of Excellence.

The goal of the Network, whose activities will start in 2015, is to foster scientific or science policy exchange between excellent junior/mid career neuroscientists who are currently either working or received their academic training in Europe and to establish a link between the generation of emerging group leaders and the current senior neuroscience community (e.g. of FENS). Membership to this highly prestigious Network is an important recognition of the scientific excellence and the highly competitive research conducted at IMBB-FORTH.

Dr. Poirazi’s work focuses on understanding how dendrites contribute to information processing and memory formation in the brain via the use of theoretical and computational modeling approaches. Dr. Poirazi has received several awards for her seminal contributions in neuroscience, including the EMBO Young Investigator award in 2005, two Marie Curie fellowships (2002 and 2008), a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2012 and the "Manolis Christofides" Young Cypriot Investigator award in 2014. She is a member of AcademiaNet: a European portal for outstanding women scientists since 2013 while in 2014 she represented the ERC at the World Economic Forum, Annual Meeting of the New Champions as one of the top 40 Young Scientists of the world.
