The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) was founded in 1985 in order to promote research in the field of humanities and in particular the historical and social sciences.

Its research projects are focused on the following areas:

  • Turkish Studies: Study of and research into the institutional and socioeconomic history of the Ottoman Empire
  • Theatre Studies: Research regarding the history of ancient and modern Greek theatre
  • Ethnomusicology: Study of the Greek cultural heritage based on documents concerning the relationship between music and society in various areas of Greece
  • Art History: Study of the Western art in Crete, of the work of El Greco («El Greco Centre») and of the Modern Greek art
  • Language - Literature: Research on Modern Greek Literature
  • History Studies: Research on the Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean during the modern and contemporary period
  • Laboratory of Geophysical - Satellite Remote Sensing and Archaeo-environment: Research in archaeological sites and training of students
