Nov 29, 2009The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) mourns the loss of Professor Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes, its Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors, who died today after a valiant battle with cancer.
Alkis Payatakes was born in Athens, Greece, on August 22, 1945. He started his academic career at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Houston in the US (1974-1981), and since 1981 he had been Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Patras in Greece. He served FORTH as Director of the Research Institute of Chemical Engineering and High Temperature Chemical Processes - ICEHT (1999-2006), as Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors (2000-2005) ,and ,since 2005, as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of FORTH's Central Administration.
His contributions to FORTH's progress and growth and to research in Greece have been of great importance.
His funeral will take place on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the 1st Patras Cemetery, Anthoupolis, in Patras at 15:00. Contributions in his memory can be made, at his family's request, to the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
