Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, will host the kick-off meeting of the international project PARTHENOS

The call has now opened for the 25th Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stephanos Pnevmatikos, both professors at the University of Crete and members of the Foundation for Research & Technology (FORTH).

Research at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, published today in the premier international scientific journal Nature, reveals an intricate molecular mechanism that coordinates the biogenesis and selective elimination of mitochondria, to regulate cellular energy homeostasis during ageing.

Researchers from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) were granted competitive funding of 3.782.583 Euros in total (1.221.547€ for IMBB-FORTH) for the proposal “Chromatin3D – Chromatin Dynamics in Development and Disease”.

Research carried out at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, the results of which were published in the international scientific journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America”, revealed new mechanisms of gene mobility and transcriptional activation in the eukaryotic cell nucleus of immune cells.

George Garinis, a Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Crete and an affiliated group leader at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), has recently been awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for his research proposal titled "Dissecting the Functional Role of Nucleotide Excision Repair in Mammals-DeFiNER."

IESL proudly announces that Prof. Dimitris Vlassopoulos (IESL Affiliated Faculty Member and Professor of the Materials Science and Technology Department of the University of Crete) was selected to win the Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology for 2015.

IMBB researchers Dr. Nikos Kourtis and Dr. Vassiliki Nikoletopoulou, headed by Prof. Nektarios Tavernarakis, uncovered a universal and potent protective mechanism against neuronal necrosis.

The ceremony of the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching "Vassilis XANTHOPOULOS - Stephanos PNEVMATIKOS" will be held at the main Hall of the Old Parliament in Athens on December 16 2014.
