Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award to FORTH Researcher Dr. Panayiota Poirazi
Dr. Panayiota Poirazi, a Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of FORTH, is the recipient of the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel International Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The official award ceremony will take place in Bamberg, Germany 28-31 March 2019.
Scientists and scholars outside Germany, who are internationally renowned in their field and are expected to have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work, are eligible to be nominated for a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award. It is worth noting that only six Greek Scientists have received this Award, all of them from Crete, five of whom are Researchers or Collaborating Faculty Members of FORTH!
Award winners are honored for their outstanding research record and are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany. The Humboldt Foundation grants about 20 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awards annually.
The award recognizes Dr. Poirazi’s research in understanding how dendrites contribute to information processing and memory formation in the brain via the use of theoretical and computational modeling approaches. This award will support Dr. Poirazi’s collaboration with her nominator, Prof. Dr. Matthew E. Larkum, at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany. The visit will help her expand her research skills into the experimental Neuroscience field, by receiving training and supervision experience on a joint experimental project in the Larkum lab.
