NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captures first-ever images of asteroid collisions around nearby star

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have captured the first direct images of catastrophic asteroid collisions in another planetary system — a discovery that provides unique insight into how planets form and evolve. The new data comes from observations of the nearby star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years from Earth. The study was recently published in the prestigious journal Science.

The Municipality of Rethymnon and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) are organizing for the year 2025 a series of lectures addressed to the general public of Rethymnon. In these talks, open to everyone, the Institute's researchers will present elements of their research work in an accessible way, followed by a discussion. The events will take place at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in the old town, 130 Nikiforou Fokas and Melissinou.

The sixth lecture titled "Crete in the Ottoman Era", will take place on Monday, December 15, 2025 at 19.30 by Antonis Anastasopoulos, Yannis Spyropoulos and Petros Kastrinakis.

The 14th Distinguished Lecture "Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes" of the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH/ICE-HT), took place on Monday, December 15, 2025 at the institute's conference center and it is open to the public.

“Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes” Distinguished Lectures are organized every year by FORTH/ICE-HT in Patras, to honor the memory of A. C. Payatakes (1945-2009), Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, Director of ICE-HT (1999-2006), and Chairman of FORTH from 2006 until his passing, on the 29th November 2009.

Μosquito vectors of malaria rapidly develop resistance against new generation insecticides

The Molecular Entomology group of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of FORTH, led by John Vontas, Professor at the Agricultural University of Athens, has a longstanding expertise and reputation in the delineation of insecticide resistance mechanisms in malaria vectors and agricultural pests. The current study, published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, was led by Dr. Sofia Balaska and Dr. Linda Grigoraki at IMBB-FORTH as main authors, and was carried out in close collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK, revealing a novel carboxylesterase-mediated mechanism of cross-resistance to insecticides in Anopheles gambiae.

The exhibition is organized by the Region of Crete, implemented by the Innovation Business Observatory (IBO) of Crete Region, and will take place on 28–30 November at the International Exhibition Center of Crete. The event is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Development and the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation.

The Natural History Museum in Heraklion came alive on Saturday, November 22, 2025, as 40 secondary education from 18 different schools and the Heraklion Science Labs Centers (EKFE) gathered for the inaugural “Youth for Diagnostics” educational event. This first-of-its-kind initiative invites students to step into the role of scientists, promoting their active involvement in real research efforts through the growing field of Citizen Science.
